How to Play Morphl

← Back to Morphl

Morphl is a free daily word ladder puzzle. Change one letter at a time to turn a start word into a target word, with every step a real word. Each puzzle has a par, like golf.

The core rule

You're given a start word and a target word of the same length — say COLD to WARM. On each turn you change exactly one letter to form a new word. Every word in your chain has to be a real, dictionary-valid word — you can't pass through nonsense on the way to the target.

Par scoring, like golf

Every puzzle has a par: the minimum number of steps a perfect chain needs to get from start to target. Solve it in fewer moves than par and you score a birdie; match it exactly for par; go over and it's a bogey. The goal isn't just to finish — it's to finish efficiently.

Streaks

Solve the daily puzzle and your streak grows by one. Miss a day and it resets — the same daily ritual as other word games, but built around a ladder instead of a grid of guesses.

Difficulty tiers

Daily puzzles come in four tiers — easy, medium, hard, and expert — each with its own start/target pair, par, and (at the higher tiers) fewer hints. Pick the one that matches how much of a challenge you want that day.

Beyond the daily puzzle

The core one-letter-at-a-time rule powers a whole suite of other modes — a timed arcade mode where words fall and you zap them, a mode with a forced waypoint word, an endless chain-building mode, and more. See every Morphl mode for the full list.
